With the passing of Labor Day, hundreds of thousands of children find themselves corralled back in school for another season of doodling, social awkwardness, and reading books where innocent animals die at the end. Many claim today’s schools are nothing more than the worst combination of babysitter and jail, a holding pen for sexed-up no-goodniks hell-bent on destroying everything good and decent their parents worked for.

Apparently this opinion’s been in vogue since the 1950s, as a teensploitation film catering to and shaking a finger at the target market comes out pretty much every 5 years. Most feature a well-meaning teacher entering a vortex of chaos. Some, like ‘Lean On Me’, ‘To Sir, With Love’, and that Coolio video for ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ show how with empathy and trust, even the violentest student can be won over. Others, such as this week’s Blackboard Jungle, focus more on beating the ever-living daylights out of the little punks:

(Still better than ‘Class of 1999′.)

But you needn’t spend 8 hours crammed in a desk next to gum snappers and kids who smell of sour milk to enjoy the benefits education confers! Why, in today’s modern, internet-based society, you can attend Youtubeniversity! Yes, that is a terrible word and I’m sorry. All the classes are covered! There’s Government:

“We needed weenies. Mr. Brown had weenies. It’s as simple as that!”

Math:

Science: “Would it work with real money?” Burning money?! SHE’S A COMMIE! Strap her down and make her watch the capitalism movie!

Art and Music:

English: “How many Eagles? Count them!” More people would pay attention to poetry if it was read by T.S. Eliot. I mean, Monty Python makes this seem like it’s a bad thing!

Shop Class:

Home Economics:

And, unfortunately, Gym:

Thomas Jefferson once said, “Determine never to be idle… It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.” Alexander Hamilton once said “Ugh, Jefferson. What a pompous ass.”* Just one of the many reasons Hamilton’s my boy; that and his kick-ass job as Secretary of the Treasury.

Crafting Season is in full swing- combine frantic knitting, sewing and whittling to finish gifts before the holiday deadline with work, shopping, holiday events and travel, plus the pesky need for sleep and food, and writing here quickly drops to the bottom of my priority list. Which is unfortunate, as for the first time this site is getting some love from other crafting sites and I hate to disappoint.

So, with a rare free day today (still a-crammed with doings), I decided to take care of now until the end of the year in one fell swoop using the beloved format of the Advent Calendar (at first it was going to run until the end of the Aztec calendar in 2012 but that seemed a bit rich). So even if I haven’t time to dig in and post, it won’t look like an abandoned Angelfire page about pretend cats around here. Nothing too fancy, just a little clip, song or image vaguely related (or not) to the holidays through to the New Year. Enjoy!

Researching reform schools, I came across this page from the College of Criminology and Criminal Justice. The school is located in Florida, a state chock full of boot camps, reform schools, ‘tough love’ clinics, juvenile lockdowns and other centers for maladjusted youth. Having access to the very subjects they’re studying make the CCCJ an invaluable wealth of information on troubled teens, as seen in their revealing ‘Kids These Days’ subheader:

….Where to begin? That Adbusters is somehow being lumped not into delusional hippie/Burning Man/protester territory but into the average teen mentality? Planned Parenthood and Condomania links sitting side by side? The errant mix of sites teens might visit (Last Rites Tattoo) and sites only concerned parents would ever, ever check out (Juvenile Slang)? THAT TEENS TODAY COULD BE PRO OR ANTI DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS?!?

Alas, many of the links no longer work, probably a conspiracy on the part of JVs (that’s juvenile delinquents to you non-inductees), but if you’re curious for the D&D stuff the search terms used were “anti d d dungeons dragons satan worship rpgs role playing” and “pro d d dungeons dragons satan worship rpgs role playing”. No bias there!

For those of you desperately wanting to check out ‘Hyperreal: Raves!!’, it jumped ship here. There’s something infinitely sad about linking to pages and forums not updated for years. If you really want to dig a splinter under your nail, I dare you to read the FAQ question ‘what is techno music’? If you’ve ever wanted to know the difference between Trance, Ambient and Deep House (the proper answer is ‘no, never’, by the way), now you can!

So go forth, learn something about Kids These Days, and next time you see a teen-aged youth on the street wearing their floppy jeans and Hip Hop singer shirt, give them the secret handshake and a wink of understanding.
